Users subconsciously direct the path of the triangle to produce a word that is in that person's subconscious thought process. This subconscious behavior is known as ideomotor action, a term coined by William Carpenter in 1882. It is also known as automatism. Some people may be convinced that the "powers" of the ouija board are real because they are unaware that they are in fact moving the piece and therefore assume that the piece must be moving due to some other "spiritual force". The subconscious thought process may produce an answer that is different from what the user expected in their conscious thought process—thus perpetuating the idea that the board has "mystical powers". Penn & Teller: Bullshit! episode on Ouija Boards, ran an experiment using unbiased participants. Questions were being asked to the late William Frawley with very strong answers. The participants were then blindfolded and the board was turned 180 degrees without their knowledge. With continued questioning, the planchette then traveled to bare areas of the board where the participants believed the "Yes" and "No" marks were located.

It works to a certain extent, but you don't have to worry about spirits bothering you. The ouija board really is just a game that you can buy in most toy stores and department stores, an ordinary piece of wood or plastic or cardboard. It is meant for two or more players, so it will not work if you try to play it alone. However, it has no supernatural powers. It does not communicate with the dead and it does not contact spirits. It does not open any portals to the underworld or to anywhere else. The people using the ouija board make it work through ideomotor movement. Here are a couple of links that discuss ouija boards and how they work.

We used to play with a quija board all of the time when I was younger. It was amazing how the piece would move and give us the answers we always wanted. But of course we were pushing it to spell out what we wanted. Never saw it actually work on its own.

dont ever play with the ouija board cuz u can get possessed, but not all the time

there are two kinds of spirits, devil spirits and Godly spirits (such as charabims and angels) only devil spirits will possess you

don't chance playing with one, its really dangerous!

P.S. i don't give a shitt if u give me a thumbs down, its the truth and im gonna speak it

They don't move by themselves...

Either somebody gets impatient and starts to move it or somebody leans in slightly and people "follow it" (increasing the speed 10-fold). It is on the news because people are gullible and like to hear that they have the answer to their problems.

spirits dont exist... neither do monsters, gods, ghosts, boogey men, santa cluas or the tooth fairy. its just everybody putting a little pressure on the glass subconciesly or conciesly resulting (if theres enough people) the glass moving. theres no danger to it but i imagen it can be very scary if you believe in that kind of stuff
