Some people talk about the death of chess because of computers and memorization.

The space for imagination in chess is still huge, but only for OTB (over the board).

It is meaningless to play online chess because of cheaters who use computer as help.

I think that playing online with lots of people is meaningless because of cheating although you will find some people who don't cheat. The problem is before you play them, you don't have a clue. Memorization on the other hand is just part of the game, and most of us can't devote all of our energies into turning our minds into chess databases.

I think that there will always be room for chess because as of yet, chess has not been solved and is unlikely to be any time soon.

It seems you haven't been playing online much. If you use a computer only to boost online rating, at some point people will catch on and not play you or report you. You will see online gaming is totally possible. Computer use that is agreed on is completely fine, just a different way to play. This is not common, however. In tournaments it is still very much live chess.

In the end, it makes no difference what a computer can do, People can still compete. Memorizing the whole game is impossible. Do you think darts is also obsolete? You could aim a computer arm at the triple/double 20 and finish all the games pretty quickly.

Yes!

The culprit behind who is responsible is clearly young players with out of control egos who control thousands of computer armies that are so strong even pro's with 2590 Fide ratings have no chance against them without using their own computer engines.

Edit:

It's a deep moral problem it can be fixed but it has to start with the small kids 5-7 who are just learning the game their coaches need to talk to them often about the importance of integrity honour and sportsmanship so when their students grow older they'll have a much better attitude than the current generation does about cheating that's the only way chess will be saved.

I think online & correspondence chess is now meaningless. Over the board chess is O.K. as all one has to do is segregate opponents as in other sports into male, female, junior, senior, A grade, B grade etc. Chess engines must play in their own category.

No. Many people play online without cheating. Only an idiot would use a computer to win a game, the win does him no good. If you decide that a particular player is using a computer, then play against someone else. Its not that difficult to move on to another game.

My favorite is correspondence chess at the link below.

I don't think computers have killed chess, no. Cars haven't killed running, and computers haven't even killed math competitions.

If you are worried about an opponent using a program to cheat - play them in person! There are plenty of tournaments where you actually face your opponent over the board.

But even online, the majority of people don't cheat.
