10 is a difficult group to play games with. The problems you usually have are that some people feel they don't have the right skill set for some of the games, like they don't know the answers to the trivia questions or they can't draw, or they can't guess well in Charades. So this means you have to try somethings that either nobody has tried before or which don't take any real skill to play but are still tons of fun.

Pictionary can be OK but I think Telephone Pictionary is better personally as it doesn't require people to draw well to have fun. It's basically like the game Telephone mashed up with Pictionary. You start with a phrase, the next player has to draw that phrase and then fold over the words so that all the third player sees is the picture, the third player then writes what they see and folds over the drawing and so on until the paper is full. The things that people see and what they describe can be amazing. I saw "He's taking a bath" become "The King of Springs" once. It's a great game where not being able to draw actually helps.

Another variation on a classic is "Reverse Charades" where instead of a Team guess what one person is acting out you have one person guessing what a Team is acting out. Every person in the group has to be part of the clue and no talking is allowed. You can search You Tube for some good examples of this, it's very fun and very funny.

I think your best solution is to look for several games for smaller groups. It seems you're open to that possibility, since a game like spades has a limit of 4 players and you've played that in the past.

The one caveat with this is that, if the games you pick are new to several people, you'd have to have enough teachers to get each game underway - assuming everyone is playing games at the same time.

If you're willing to spend some money of some new games and want to learn how to play them before summer comes, you've got many good sources of information about fun board games for adults (and other ages). Board Game Geek is a huge database of games (almost 51,000 currently) that you can search to narrow down your choices. A blog such as Fun Board Games features many accessible games with brief explanations of each.

I'll suggest 3 here that you might start with.

1) The Settlers of Catan

2) Ticket to Ride

3) Carcassonne

None of these take very long to learn, and some of your family members may have already played one or more of them.

Cosmic Wimpout!

It's a super simple 'push your luck' dice scoring game that's fun for a group of any size.

Look for it on ebay or at your local game store. As a last resort, order it directly from their site:

The creators of the game can be a little flaky with orders - but they are really nice people.

"Things..."

Serious, that's what it's called. It's a party game, similar to Apples to Apples (but much better, in my opinion). Doesn't have a lot of complicated rules and tends to be pretty fun, even in large groups.

Play "The Resistance." Its fantastic, short, and has tons of replay value. I play it regularly with my boardgame group when we are looking for something light and quick. 10/10 times a new person plays, they enjoy the game.

Play Scatergories, a really fun game where you have to get answers that start with a cirtain letter that no one else has.

I find the best way to play with such a large group is to play games where the group is split into teams. The teams can be split however you want although it is nice to try and make them even in their skills so everyone has a fair chance of winning.

Some great team games include:

Cranium - a mix of trivia, charades, pictionary and just plain fun - I've never met anyone that doesn't LOVE this game

Taboo - you need to make your team say a word but you have a list of 5 words you cannot say - it can get really silly and is not as easy as it sounds

Rummoli - a card game that is super easy to learn but lots of fun to play and rummoli board are cheap and easy to find

Outburst - your team is given a category and you need to try and guess items from that category - the other team is checking off your responses from a given list, the more you get from the list the more points - this game is great because there are often really silly answers on the category lists

Scattegories - although normally not played in teams it can be, especially when in a large group - you need to think of creative answers that all start with the same letter

Good luck with your next get together. I hope you have lots of fun!

RE:

best board games for an adult group of 10?

Just looking for fun board or card game to play when my family gets together this summer (we are a big group of 10-12 adults). Although they are all good games... I am so sick of playing hearts, spades, apples to apples and catch phrase I could scream! Thanks for your ideas :)

Taboo is a good one and lots of fun for large groups. There are versions of Trivial Pursuit that might be good for your purposes, depending on the kids. Also consider Pictionary and Charades.
