Hi im just starting out playing dungeons and dragons and im having trouble with the character sheet?

please can some one tell me how to fill in the ability checks like i have
12 strength +1 modifier nothing in the check (because im not sure how to work it out)
and underneath im trained in athletics so my athletics check is +6 if you can help me ide be very happy

Ability score bonuses are determined by a rather simple formula. Take the ability score, subtract ten, and then divide by two. Remember you are always supposed to round down.



In this case +1 one is correct (12-10)/2 = 1



To determine your score in a skill you take: the related ability bonus + any racial skill bonus + training if you have it + one-half your level. Again always round down.



Again your math is correct, assuming you are playing a level 1 character without racial athletics bonus (1+0+5+0) = 6



Some skills, such as athletics and acrobatics, take a special penalty based on the kind of armor you are wearing. This is called the armor check penalty and is -1 for chainmail and scale, and -2 for plate armor. There is a similar penalty for shields as well. You should probably write this penalty into the calculations because it will be rare when you are caught without your armor, but do remember that this is a penalty you can get rid of by taking the armor/shield off temporarily.

Thomas basically covered it. Just wanted to add if your character is above level 1, there's also a modifier based on level: Level/2 rounded down. (This applies to just about everything - ability checks, skill checks, attacks, initiative, etc.) For skills, you add 3 if you are trained in that skill. Non-human races will usually have a bonus (typically +2) to a couple of skills. If your DM uses the optional backgrounds rule, the background you select will grant yet another bonus to a particular skill.
