I am a bit old school, but I recommend Chess Master vs Chess Amateur by Max Euwe (former World Champ). It goes over the difference between how a master thinks and a amateur thinks in a very straightforward nontechnical way. It would give you an idea where you might need to go next, like Think like a Grandmaster by Kotov which is much more technical. Remember the indian saying "Chess is a sea where a gnat may drink and an elephant bathe."

There are many great books to learn for beginners. If you are younger (teens and below), many chess professionals recommend the book, "How To Beat Your Dad at Chess".

I would highly recommend you joint the Internet Chess Club (ICC). Their website is www.chessclub.com. Many beginners, professionals, even computers, and all levels of players play online. You can observe games, etc. Check it out.
