Well, There's a tournament coming up, and I have been studying for months. I've gotten 2nd in the provincials three times now, but never 1st. I already have a personal trainer, but I feel as though my chess ability is not improving. Any tips?

Hello;

First things first, congratulations on your wins so far and the dedication to study chess seriously.

There are probably a lot of ways to train for an event ... your coach should be able to give you excellent advice on the best way for you to train.

Here is what I do ... select a chess program that you like ... one that has the ability to create opponents. I like to create opponents that are not as strong as I am. This lets me play a lot of games and it builds my confidence when I win against the computer. In this day and age of small palm top computers one can play almost any time or any place.

I select a couple of openings and I play them constantly against the computer this gives me a lot of OTB experience.

I am not a strong player ... but this approach can't hurt.

One other thing I do, whether I am preparing for a tournament or not is to visit:

What opening preparation to do, depends on knowing who you are playing. So this could be 24 hours before hand, studying their on line database of games. Or just by talking to people who have played them before, and they will say which systems they use and then prepare to play those variations.

Playing some kind of chess activity, whether friendly or serious for an hour before the match to get into the correct mindset helps me.

It is a sad fact of a competitors career, that there is a leveling out of performance. This is true of all sports and activities. I consider winning 50% of the games and above, to be good ability. Seems you are at 90%. Chess takes years to master.

For you to improve and develop into a good player you have to play against Opponents with a rock solid game. Learning from your mistakes and losses against more experienced opponents will make you a much better Chess Player that's the key hard work and constant practice against Players that can beat you and pulverize you at the Chess Board you aren't going to find that kind of Player on Yahoo you'll have better luck on ICC or over the board at a Chess Club. Stronger Opponents will make you work hard and focus when you play them, you develop good habits if you play bad Players, who don't care about their Chess you'll become like them over time and get nowhere.

Another way to sharpen your game is to play lots of Correspondence Chess:

I recommend the CCLA because this is a for real organization that's been around since 1909 their Players are honest and don't cheat with Chess Engines.

Good luck!!

hello,

Yes being first is everything! To improve your chess games you must play lots and lots of games online. Some times online you might even be playing a master or grandmaster! All the games that you have lost or think you could have done better you must review it. Read some books that help you spot tactics immediately. You must always be on the lookout for a tactic!

certain they do advance your recreation to an volume. yet fixing puzzles all of your existence will take you nowhere. not ordinary your self hostile to larger rated on line combatants and studying video games performed by gradmasters, alongside with fixing puzzles will take you to dizzying heights if you're dedicated adequate and performance adequate braing means. The puzzle many times places the solver in awkward circumstances which have risen in authentic video games. some contain possible unnecessary sacrifices to win the game, some do not, and some have more advantageous than one answer. And different puzzles merely project you to pull a checkmate out of thin air at the same time as not something seems conceivable or at the same time as a recreation is heading for a draw. the point of those puzzles is to make you imagine. in case you get stuck in a humorous concern, you do not sense like a stranger to the project getting your way out of traps or pulling friends out of nowhere. TIP: In authentic video games, the formerly you spot a seize, the more advantageous constructive off you'd be.

Study the classics-Capablanca, Fisher, Spassky, Karpov, set up the board and set up pawns and 1 more piece-learn how to use pawns-people give them away. Play your self. If you go to kids.yahoo.com the have an arcade-select board and tiles and you can play chess. Allow yourself to lose. Study the consequences of bad mistakes, this will increase your board vision.

You must learn even more about and try to outwit your opponent somehow.

Try different opponents, perhaps on-line.
