The most prestigious individual competition is the world chess championship. This is open to all human players. In addition there are separate events and titles for women, juniors, seniors, and computers.

The most prestigious team event is the Chess Olympiad, held every even numbered year. Different countries send teams of their best players to compete against the other countries. In 2006 there were 148 teams. Armenia won the gold medal, The People's Republic of China won the silver medal, and The United States won the bronze medal.

Just because nobody's mentioned it, a very important chess tournament is Linares, held in Linares, Spain. Typically the world's top 6 or 8 are invited.

I used to know this years ago, but no longer. I suppose the biggest event would be matches for world champion. Oftentimes you have a bunch of candidates, then after a big Candidate Tournament one gets selected to play the world champin.

A few years ago Karpov was asked this very question. His answer, "Ex-World Champion", which he happened to be at the time. When Kasparov was told of Karpov's retort, Kasparov responded with a smile, "World Champion is also a good title to have." Kasparov was the current World Champion, at the time.
