A good alternative to dice?

I'm looking for a good idea for something I can make by hand with few resources as an alternative to dice. I've planned a board game for a class tomorrow. Ideally another teacher will have dice when I arrive at the school, but just in case no one has any, do you have any ideas for getting a random number to determine how many spaces to move?

Spinners? They seem to work very well with kids and with all the different colours they seem to work pretty well :) if you just get a piece of paper, cut it into a hexagon, put a toothpick threw it then you can just decorate it however you want ;) Its simple and it works :)

Maybe something like a raffle. You pull a random number out of a hat or container.

Maybe use two dice, or even a 10 sided dice.

Or make a piece of cardboard and divide it up into 6 pieces, then put a toothpick through the middle. It will be like a spinning top.

I doubt whether you will have one, but it's a electronic dice, You click a button, and lights light up, and where it stops, is the number you use.

Pick a card. Clubs for 1 space, Diamonds for 2, Hearts for 3, Spades for 4, Face card for 5, Ace for 6.

Heres a good one

1. Collect a normal pencil

2. Collect a pin

3. Poke on each side of the pencil the numbers (1 hole = 1, 2 holes = 2, 3 holes = 3, ect...

4. Then just role the pencil and see what side it lands on.

Piece of card, cut into hexagon shape. Each side has a number 1 - 6, stick a match through the middle.

print up pieces of paper with the numbers 1-6 on them. You can probably make them as small as 1 x 1 inch, so you'd get 88 of them out of just one sheet of paper. Shuffle them up, and draw one (or two, one for each die you would roll) every time you would roll the dice.

You could take a deck of cards and keep the A through 8 and shuffle the cards and draw one for movement.

Ask one of the children to count to 6 over and over again in their head.. then get one of the other kids to say stop.. and ask them what number they were on their head at that time
