To Those Who Have The Answers,

Chess is one of my most favorite games. I have competed in several local tournaments, and have placed every time. However, having very few players around I have become a little rusty. I am looking for a website where I could play online daily with others. Something that keeps track of your wins and loses, and something that gives you a rank would be great. I'm just looking for daily practice to keep me in the game. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good site that offers these things?

Thank you!

http://gameknot.com

Has day/move, OR games/day; rated or unrated games.

http://chessproblems.com

Has excellent puzzles.

http://Instantchess.com

You can play here, but you would need to sign up to have a rating.

http://cometoplay.net/games.asp

Choose your opponent; real-time games.

Hope these help! ;)

A couple of others:

Here, you can play chess against players from all over the world. This is mostly a "correspondence" chess site, so you can set a game so that each player makes one move per day, or have longer time controls if you and your opponent agree. You can play in real time if you and your opponent have access to the site at the same time, but that's something you'd have to arrange.

Basically, on this site, you make your move, your opponent is notified by email that it is now their turn to move, and then when they make their move, you receive an email notifying you that it's your turn to move.

The site also has discussion forums on chess, as well as just about every other subject you can think of... sports, politics, religion, science/math, etc.

The site does keep track of your wins and losses, and you can access and review any of your past games (or games in progress) at any time. The good thing about this site is that you can have several games going at once, against different players. It also starts you out with a provisional rating, and adjusts your rating accordingly depending upon your results.

Another is:

Pretty much the same deal here. It's a correspondence site.

It sounds like you might actually be looking for sites where you can play a full game in real time, rather than over several days or weeks. But if you are interested in correspondence chess, the two sites I listed are very good.

btw - each site allows "non-subscribers" to play a limited number of simultaneous correspondence games, but if you're a subscriber, the number of games that you can be playing at once is unlimited.

You might want to check these out. It's cool to have a lot of games going, it'll give you something to always think about.

Hello Dr. Pepper;

There are quite a few places to play chess on the web.

My favourite is FICS (Free Internet Chess Service). It is a whole server dedicated to playing chess. As the name implies it is free. You have to have some specialized software to use it, (free too). Once you get used to playing -- it is very easy and everything is designed to help you play chess.

1. There are many different levels of players from beginners to Grand Masters, at any given time there are several hundred players on line.

2. You can set most of the variables in the games to whatever is agreeable -- speed chess, or standard is no problem. Times are meticulously kept.

3. It keeps the track of ratings and rankings of the people using the system.

4. It can be set to send the scores of your games to your E-mail address.

5. It has lessons and lectures on chess.

The URL to get started is: http://www.freechess.org

Another cool site is: http://www.chessgames.com -- it is not a play chess as such. It is a chess community where one can look at (and discuss) great chess games. It has a daily puzzle site, player spotlights, and all kinds of chess fun things.

I've also competed in many tournaments, though few were local, and have been lucky enough to come away with a nice little hoard of medals. Chess.com is what i use.

Paying for membership on chess.com will get you extra features, but is in no way necessary if all you intend to do is play games and get a rank. Be warned that your internet rank will more than likely be higher than your actual rank. The tactics trainer on chess.com is excellent for passing time. I recommend giving it a try.

FICS, the Free Internet Chess Server. Don't play on Yahoo. Years ago, I wrote an entire article on why you SHOULDN'T play chess here at Yahoo. The link is below:

Funorb.com. I play there nearly nonstop. You have to created an account but then you can play games both rated and unrated, and you can look on the highscores for your win/loss/draw percentages. You can also add people to a friends list there. I've found it a great place to play chess and meet friends. I play on Bigyugi9 and 2n22 Akbyr on there, feel free to add me should you decide to play.
