There are a lot of great board games out there right now. Though many are not available at mainstream stores like Target or Walmart, more and more of them are becoming available there.
One of the best you can find at Target is Ticket To Ride. It's an easy to learn game for 2-5 players where you collect cards and play them to place trains on the board to connect cities and complete train routes.
Also in Target is Settlers of Catan. It's also a very good game, but I'm not the biggest fan of the game, so it's not for everyone. In the game you're trying to build cities, roads and settlements on the board to collect goods and allow you to build better things and get more points. I know it doesn't sound like fun, but it's a very good game, especially with players who are willing to trade.
One final game from Target: Zooloretto. It seems like it might be a kids game from the box, but it is one of the most devious games out there. Everyone is running a zoo and you're trying to get sets of animals, but not too many. You have to choose if you want to load a tile onto a truck or take a truck that is already there. So you can build a good truck, but then you won't be able to choose it until the next time around, and it's possible that your opponents might steal it away from you. Or, you might take a truck too early and then see that final Flamingo that you need pop up, but it's too late and you have to wait until the next round to be able to try for more Flamingos. I swear, it's better than it sounds. It's very good and one of the most Back-Stabby games I've ever played. You have to take every opportunity to hurt your opponents that you get. It's one of my favorite games right now.
Outside of Target there are even more, way more than I can list here. You can find your Friendly Local Game Store and see what they have and ask what they would suggest for a new group like yours.
I hope this has been helpful. Happy Gaming.
